Liquidations in Ethereum lending markets are almost entirely completed in a single transaction—of the approximately $1.63 billion in liquidations over the past year, 89% followed atomic paths. This figure comes from analytics firm Sentora, and shows how heavily on-chain lending’s backstop mechanisms now rely on instant DEX liquidity.
An atomic path means collateral liquidation and debt repayment are completed within the same on-chain transaction. Flash loans, fronting funds, and direct contract calls all qualify. The advantage is speed; the drawback is that pools must be deep enough to absorb the collateral being dumped.
The problem lies with RWAs. These types of collateral have shallow liquidity pools and transfer restrictions such as whitelisting, making them impossible to liquidate instantly on a DEX. Sentora expects liquidations to increasingly shift toward off-chain market makers, RFQ, and solver-based routes, where a compliant party first takes on the collateral before closing out the position.
This is a trend worth watching: the liquidation efficiency of on-chain lending is being reshaped by the regulatory characteristics of collateral. ETH is currently at 2419.01, down 1.62% over the period, with a high of 2480.25 and a low of 2356.79. Volatility is relatively modest, but changes in liquidation routes could affect actual losses during extreme market conditions.
