EU designates USDC as its first significant electronic money token, with stricter oversight starting in November
According to CoinWorld, the European Banking Authority (EBA) announced that it has designated USDC as the EU’s first “significant electronic money token” (EMT), meaning the stablecoin will be subject to a higher level of regulatory oversight.
Under the regulatory arrangements, starting November 12, the EBA will directly oversee the prudential aspects of USDC’s issuer, including capital, reserve assets, liquidity, and recovery and redemption plans.
The designation was made in accordance with the EU’s relevant regulatory standards for electronic money tokens. It marks a further clarification of USDC’s regulatory status in the EU market, and the issuer will face corresponding compliance requirements.
For Circle, the issuer of USDC, the upcoming oversight will cover several areas, including fund reserves, capital adequacy, and liquidity management. The relevant responsibilities will be carried out in accordance with the EU’s new requirements. $BTC $ETH
