A bullish catalyst is right around the corner, yet UNI keeps sliding—CME opens tomorrow. Is anyone waiting to “buy the rumor, sell the news”?

CME officially launches UNI futures tomorrow (October 19): standard contracts cover 10,000 UNI, Micro contracts 1,000 UNI, and BCH futures launch the same day. It’s an institutional-grade, compliant hedging tool—and something of a “ticket for the pros to enter the arena” for UNI.

But the market isn’t impressed:
- UNI is currently struggling around $7. The $7.31–$7.35 range is a short-term battleground between bulls and bears. If it falls below $7, the next area to watch is $6.50–$6.80 (CoinStats, 10-18).
- Derivatives data is subdued: open interest across the market stands at $643 million, down 14.55% over 30 days; the funding rate is 0.0041% per 8 hours, so longs aren’t crowded; and liquidations over the past 24 hours totaled less than $800,000, 85% of them from long positions—all signs that no one dares to make a heavily leveraged directional bet.

The contrast is that the fundamentals are actually holding up. Analyst Darkfost noted that Uniswap’s TVL climbed back above $4 billion in September, monthly DEX trading volume hit a record $93.6 billion, and UNI has rebounded 370% from its June low (Stocktwits, 10-17; DefiLlama data as of 10-16 puts TVL at around $3.91 billion).

My take: a futures launch is never an “automatic price pump.” Once institutions have access to hedging tools, volatility often picks up in the short term. And crypto has an old playbook: good news turns into a sell-the-news event. “Buy the rumor, sell the news” is likely to play out around tomorrow’s open. What really matters isn’t whether the price rises or falls on day one, but whether hard data like TVL and trading volume can support the price. If UNI holds $7, $8–$8.40 is the first target; if it loses that level, don’t rush to catch a falling knife.

CME opens tomorrow—are you betting up or down? See you in the comments.
