Grayscale is stirring things up again: three crypto funds with a $2,500 minimum investment—but they’re not really for retail investors
Grayscale has teamed up with Republic over the past few days to launch three crypto-focused funds at once: a DeFi fund, a decentralized AI fund, and a data network trust. The minimum investment is $2,500. Grayscale announced the news on October 15.
Before you get excited, these are only open to accredited investors, so ordinary retail investors still can’t get in. The $2,500 minimum looks much lower than the hundreds of thousands of dollars required for private placements in the past, but retail investors still can’t clear this hurdle.
The holdings are interesting. The DeFi fund includes familiar names like UNI, AAVE, and ONDO, while the AI fund holds TAO, RENDER, and NEAR. I took a closer look when I saw those names—there’s some overlap with the tokens I dollar-cost average into myself. It suggests institutions aren’t thinking all that differently from retail investors about which areas look promising.
Grayscale has bundled the leaders in several sectors into baskets, saving investors the trouble of picking them one by one. But keep in mind that all three are private placements, so they’re less liquid than ETFs. If you want to get out, you might not be able to do so easily.
A $2,500 minimum may not look like much, but losses still hurt. Market sentiment is leaning toward fear right now, and altcoins are down 8% to 12% across the board this week. With institutions rolling out new products at a time like this, they either think the dip is an opportunity or want to accumulate at lower prices. Either way, they’re not doing it out of charity.
