Wall Street is running for the exits: hedge funds dump AI stocks for five days straight

According to the latest data from Goldman Sachs Prime Brokerage, from October 8 to 14, global hedge funds were net sellers of AI stocks for five consecutive trading days, wiping out all their net purchases since the start of 2025. They spent more than a year building those positions, then cleared them out in five days.

A few more painful numbers: one of those days saw the second-biggest single-day sell-off in the past year. The ratio of long selling to short covering was 3.5:1, which suggests they weren’t betting against the market—they were cutting into their own positions to survive. Hedge funds lost 2.9% overall that week, Asian fund managers were down 6.8% in the first half of October, and South Korea’s KOSPI plunged 8%, hitting a six-month low.

Two years’ worth of money poured into AI stocks can flow back out in a single week. The money fleeing is now hiding in healthcare and consumer staples.

The debate is open: A: This is just the first wave—some people still have to cut off a limb to survive. B: Once the sell-off is over, it’s a ticket to buy the dip. I’m in.
