Hardware wallets are a joke now! $90 million drained, and Ledger’s official checks didn’t catch a single one 😱

Absurd doesn’t even begin to cover it—the whole point of buying a hardware wallet is that your private key never goes online. But this batch came with a “phone line” built right in.

The criminal gang bought genuine devices and soldered a listening device into the screen’s ribbon cable. When you powered it on and set it up, as the screen displayed your 24 recovery words, it secretly read them and used its own LTE signal to text them back to the gang’s hideout. No need for your Wi-Fi or computer. And Ledger’s official authenticity check still stamped every device “genuine, untampered.”

The result: over 300 wallets drained, with estimated losses exceeding $90 million. CryptoBilis, the Malaysian distributor, has already closed its Kuala Lumpur store. The official advice: if you bought a device through this distributor, move your crypto immediately and generate a new recovery phrase.

Put simply, the worst part isn’t the $90 million—it’s that the “cold wallet = safe” reputation has been shattered. The verification system spent all that time guarding against software attacks, while someone just tampered with the hardware. What are you supposed to do about that?

One more thing: only buy hardware wallets from the official website. Don’t be tempted by a small discount from a reseller—the few dollars you save could end up being the shipping fee for your entire net worth.
