💸 Stablecoin supply is stagnant, yet payments have surged 45%?
On October 15, on-chain data platform Allium published its Q3 “Stablecoins and Payments” report: By the end of September, stablecoin payment volume had grown 45% this year to $482 billion, while total stablecoin supply increased just 0.4% over the same period, to around $305 billion.
📋 Key figures
• Payment count grew 71% to 1.04 billion
• Average payment size fell from $544 to $462, indicating more frequent, smaller payments
• September payment volume reached $72 billion, a new monthly high
• Tether, Circle, and Ethena saw their supplies decline this year, while other issuers collectively recorded a net increase of $6.9 billion
• Note: By Allium’s methodology, payments account for about one-fifth of adjusted transaction volume after excluding flows such as trading and DeFi. This does not represent all stablecoin transfers.
⚖️ What does this mean for the market?
Stablecoin growth is shifting from “holding and trading” toward “real-world use,” a long-term positive for payments and cross-border remittances. But the lack of supply growth suggests that new capital entering the market remains limited. BTC is currently around $81,700, with a 14-day low of about $79,800.
• Support: $80,400 / $79,800
• Resistance: $84,200 / $86,700
