France plans to tighten its crypto tax rules, and converting crypto into euro stablecoins may also trigger taxes.
According to Cointelegraph, on October 16, France’s National Assembly passed a 2027 budget amendment by 38 votes to 37, with 25 abstentions. The proposal would eliminate tax deferral for conversions of crypto assets into single-fiat stablecoins that meet the EU’s MiCA definition, treating such transactions as taxable disposals. It is planned to take effect on January 1, 2027.
Under the current tax system, the gains in question may be subject to a flat rate of 31.4%. However, the amendment has not yet been finalized and still requires review by the Senate; its exact scope and implementation also remain unclear.
The proposal could have an impact because stablecoins are often used to move funds between trades or as a temporary safe haven. If converting into stablecoins also triggers tax, investors may face higher portfolio-rebalancing costs and more complex tax reporting, with frequent traders particularly affected.
However, the proposal is still under legislative review, so it cannot be assumed that the new rules will take effect as currently written. The Senate’s review and the final wording will determine the tax changes that crypto investors in France actually face.
