Institutional money ran again this week.
CoinShares Oct. 16 weekly report: digital asset products saw net outflows of $434 million last week.
The trigger was the U.S. September CPI released on Oct. 14.
Inflation came in at 3.7%, hotter than the expected 3.6%.
Retail sales also beat expectations, at +0.8% versus the expected +0.3%.
When the data came in strong, rate-hike expectations came rushing back.
Money’s first reaction: run.
U.S. spot ETFs were hit even harder, with a combined outflow of $610 million last week.
Ethereum was the main target of selling, with net outflows of $320 million.
That exceeded Bitcoin’s $228 million, which is not a common sight.
Still, compared with the week before, this was relatively mild.
The week before saw $1.29 billion in outflows across the network, so last week was cut by more than half.
Sentiment deteriorated, outflows were cut in half—kind of a mess.
CoinShares itself said it was just a "data-driven shakeout," not a trend reversal.
In plain English: it’s not that people are bearish on crypto, they’re just afraid of rate hikes.
Right now the money is sitting on the sidelines, waiting for the late-October policy meeting.
Polymarket is pricing the probability of rates staying unchanged at 75%.
This isn’t a bear market—it’s money standing in line.
