Imagine you want to buy a coin, the price looks good, and you have enough balance…

However, your order is canceled immediately!

Was there an error with the platform? 🤔

Not necessarily. You may have selected Post Only.

🎓 BINANCE MASTERCLASS | Lesson 14

🧩 Post Only — an order that aims to add liquidity, not take it immediately!

💡 ① The basic idea

There are two types of participants in the order book:

🟢 Maker: Places an order that waits in the order book, adding liquidity.

🔵 Taker: Executes immediately against an existing order, consuming liquidity.

The Post Only option tells the platform:

“I want to be a Maker only. If my order would execute immediately, don’t execute it.”

🎯 ② A real-world example

Imagine the best ask price for a cryptocurrency is 100 USDT.

And you want to buy one unit.

Scenario 1:

You place a Limit buy order at 99 USDT with Post Only.

✅ Since the price is below the best ask, the order can enter the order book and wait.

Scenario 2:

You place a Limit buy order at 101 USDT with Post Only.

❌ This order could immediately match the existing sell order at 100.

But because you enabled Post Only, it won’t execute immediately and may be canceled or rejected, depending on the platform’s rules.

The surprising part: cancellation isn’t necessarily a problem here; it may actually be the correct outcome for a condition you chose!

🧠 ③ What is it useful for?

Post Only helps traders avoid having their orders execute as Takers.

Maker fees may differ from Taker fees, depending on the market, fee tier, and user account.

But keep in mind:

Post Only doesn’t guarantee zero fees, nor does it guarantee that the order will be executed later.

👑 ④ Pro tip

There’s an important difference between:

Limit: You set the maximum price you’re willing to pay when buying, or the minimum price you’re willing to accept when selling.

Post Only: You add a condition that the order must not take existing liquidity when it’s submitted.

So not every Limit order automatically becomes a Maker order!

The option’s name and how the platform handles crossing orders may vary by market and interface.

👑 The golden takeaway from lesson 14

Post Only doesn’t mean “execute at a better price”; it means “don’t execute immediately as a Taker.”

💬 Quick quiz:

The best ask is 100 USDT.

If you place a Limit buy order at 101 USDT with Post Only, will it execute immediately?

🅰️ Yes.

🅱️ No, because Post Only prevents immediate execution.
