At three in the morning, I stared at AVA’s candlestick chart on the screen, my finger hovering over the “Open Long” button. I couldn’t bring myself to press it.

It all started three days ago. AVA was still trading sideways around $0.28, when I saw someone in the group chat say, “This coin is about to take off.” I didn’t think much of it at the time. But when I woke up the next morning, AVA had already climbed to $0.35, up 25%. I spent the whole day kicking myself.

By the third day—that is, yesterday—AVA kept climbing, briefly reaching $0.42. The group chat went wild, filled with messages like “Get in now!” and “It’s not too late!” I finally couldn’t resist. I opened my Binance futures account, deposited all the 3,000 USDT I had, and went long on AVA with 50x leverage at an entry price of $0.38.

“This time, I’m going to win it all back,” I thought. I’d lost money before because I hadn’t acted decisively enough. This time, I’d spotted the trend. With 50x leverage, all I needed was a 2% rise to make 100%.

Right after I opened the position, the price did move up a little—to $0.385, then $0.39. I was so excited my hands were shaking. My unrealized profit showed more than 200 USDT, and I was already thinking about what I’d do with the money once it hit my account.

But it didn’t last. At one in the morning, a huge red candle suddenly crashed down, and the price plunged from $0.39 to $0.33. My margin ratio dropped straight from 80% to 15%. A warning popped up: “Your position is at risk of liquidation. Please add margin promptly.”

I panicked and hurried to transfer money into my account, but bank transfers in the middle of the night take time. As I scrambled, the price kept falling—to $0.31, then $0.30. At 2:17 a.m., my position was liquidated.

3,000 USDT. Gone.

I slumped in my chair, staring blankly at the liquidation record. When my account balance showed 0.00, the whole thing suddenly felt absurd. That 3,000 was two months’ salary, and I’d lost it all in ten minutes.

The irony is that AVA has climbed back up again this morning. It’s now trading at $0.3956, higher than the price at which I was liquidated. If I hadn’t used leverage, if I’d simply bought spot and held, I’d be in profit right now.

But leverage doesn’t let you make mistakes. 50x leverage means that if the price moves just 2% against you, you’re out. And in the cryptocurrency market, a 2% swing can happen in just a few minutes.

I understand now: futures trading isn’t investing—it’s gambling. And gambling only ever has one ending.

That red candle in the middle of the night didn’t just wipe out my 3,000 USDT. It also crushed my last remaining fantasy about “getting rich quick.”
