The South Korean government plans to convene a roundtable on October 20 with representatives from five major virtual asset exchanges, including Upbit and Bithumb, as well as DAXA executives, to discuss the virtual asset tax policy originally scheduled to take effect in January 2027. Under the current plan, South Korea will tax income from the transfer and lending of virtual assets at a rate of 22%, after deducting a basic tax-free allowance of 2.5 million won. The policy has been postponed three times since it was first proposed in 2020. The government is still preparing to implement it on schedule, and the National Tax Service is expected to issue a related notice in November. Meanwhile, South Korea’s financial regulators are speeding up work on the government’s draft of the Digital Asset Basic Act, which is expected to be completed by the end of this month, followed by the launch of consultations.
