At 5 a.m. this morning, news of a whale getting liquidated jolted everyone awake.

Two days ago, address 0x30afce opened the biggest leveraged long position: $187 million in total—1,822 BTC ($150 million, entry at $82,409) and 15,270 ETH ($37.33 million, entry at $2,455). Last month, he also made $14.8 million on a NEAR long. On-chain, he looked like a trading genius.

Then, in the early hours today, ETH wicked down to $2,356. His ETH liquidation price was $2,406, and the wick pierced right through it: 4,890 ETH, worth $11.74 million, were liquidated on the spot. Even more painful: $2,356 was ETH’s low for the day, and his liquidation orders may well have helped fuel that wick.

A question to ponder: Does winning once make the market assume you’ll always win? Did the leverage bring down a genius this time, or is maximum leverage just a meat grinder tailor-made for “geniuses”?

Pick one in the comments:
A. He was just unlucky. Someone else could take the exact same position and still soar.
B. There are no geniuses with maximum leverage—only tombstones paid for in installments.
If you’re still holding an ETH long, drop a number below.
