What’s left of tokenized stocks without DeFi?
An opinion piece by Wu Shuo breaks down the question: RWA is not the same as tokenization itself; a token is merely a barcode for an entitlement. Real financial value comes from six layers of robust mechanisms, including enforceable secondary-market liquidity, liquidation and disposition, and legal validity.
DeFi’s utility lies in building a complete operating system around assets, including credit, hedging, and liquidation, to ensure the ability to exit under stress and to price risk. RWA, meanwhile, requires a relationship graph to monitor dependencies among assets, entities, markets, and other factors, and to build a closed-loop operating model with dynamic risk controls.
Consider two scenarios: if secondary-market liquidity is enforceable, tokenized stocks can be meaningfully priced and exited; if liquidation and disposition mechanisms and legal validity are absent, even the most polished barcode will struggle under pressure. Which layer matters more to you—liquidity or legal validity?
