Autheo issued an announcement on October 17. Users were asked to pause buying, selling, and cross-chain transfers. THEO trading recommendations were flagged as pending verification.

It started on October 12. The attacker used just one trusted relayer private key to mint 19 million unbacked THEO out of thin air. The tokens came in via the Hyperlane bridge on Base.

The tokens were dumped straight into a liquidity pool. PeckShield put the amount at 700.8 ETH, worth about $1.76 million. That ETH was bridged from Base back to Ethereum mainnet.

Monitor Defimon sounded the alarm at 08:07 UTC on the 13th. The announcement offered no recovery plan. The team only said it was investigating with its technical partners.

THEO is now trading at $0.0001716, down 4.37% on the day. An earlier crash had wiped out more than 90% of its value.

In crypto, trust in cross-chain bridges is concentrated in a single key. Once that key is compromised, 19 million tokens turn into real money. How do you think relayer permissions should be divided? Share your thoughts in the comments.
