241 scam domains and 112 servers taken down in one sweep: This crypto investment scam targeting Russian-speaking victims had been operating for more than three years. Law enforcement dismantled its infrastructure, with implications extending far beyond how much money can be recovered. The scam used Russian-language ads and “advisors” to lure victims into transferring cryptocurrency to fake platforms. When victims tried to withdraw their funds, they were asked to pay extra fees; they were also targeted with secondary asset-recovery scams. Victims lost tens of millions of dollars, and some lost their life savings. So far, only about $300,000 has been recovered. When scams can be replicated at scale using servers, is dismantling the infrastructure more effective than trying to recover funds afterward?
