Polygon made a major strategic move by acquiring Coinme, and its CEO, Marc Boiron, was clear about the goal: to make a full-scale entry into the payments sector, a massive market currently dominated by giants like Visa and Stripe. The core idea is for Polygon to directly control its relationship with end customers—something intermediaries have handled until now. This would also allow it to capture a share of the revenue that previously went to those same intermediaries. In other words, Polygon doesn’t want to be just a technical blockchain network; it wants to become a real player in the everyday flow of money. The question is whether a blockchain can truly challenge traditional payment giants, and what that would mean for the long-term value of the MATIC ecosystem.
