According to U.S. Treasury Department data, net interest payments by the federal government reached $1.05 trillion in fiscal year 2026, which ended Sept. 30, up more than 8% from $970 billion in fiscal year 2025 and a record high. The Peter G. Peterson Foundation estimates that the spending amounted to 3.2% of GDP, surpassing the previous record set in 1991. GDP data for the third quarter will be released later this month. The report notes that interest costs are consuming a growing share of federal revenue, increasing pressure to borrow to pay interest and potentially reducing the United States’ fiscal capacity to respond to economic shocks.
