The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index is down 14%—AI narrative premiums are getting hit first
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has fallen nearly 14% since October 6. TSMC has set new profit records for six consecutive quarters, with capital spending set to reach $76 billion next year. Nvidia has locked in more than $250 billion in purchase commitments through January 2029, while Micron is using $32 billion in take-or-pay contracts to shift delivery risk to customers. The thicker suppliers’ cash flows get, the more fragile downstream valuations and the secondary market become.
This sell-off is targeting expectations for the growth trajectory of AI capex. Current profits are still hitting record highs, but share prices have already turned lower. As risk appetite retreats, high-beta assets like BTC come under pressure; ETH is more volatile, while the narrative premium on AI-compute tokens is the first to be stripped away. In the short term, BTC is repeatedly absorbing selling pressure above key support. If the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index breaks lower again, the pullback in on-chain AI tokens will be significantly larger than the broader market’s.
For those of you holding AI-themed tokens, what’s your cost basis—and at these levels, are you willing to add, or will you cut your position first?
