On October 17, the onshore yuan closed at 6.6868 against the U.S. dollar, while the offshore yuan approached 6.6830 intraday. Both hit their highest levels since July 2022. A weaker dollar, strong exports and trade surplus, and dovish signals from Fed officials saying they would not prejudge rate hikes sent the U.S. Dollar Index down to around 101.8. In the short term, the yuan remains subject to fluctuations in expectations for U.S. interest rates and geopolitical factors.
