The U.S. stock market is closed for the weekend, but my mind hasn’t had a moment’s rest.
First, last night’s close: the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell another 3.8%, marking its eighth consecutive trading-day decline. Since October 6, it’s down 15.7%—its longest losing streak since 2008. The Nasdaq fell 2.15% yesterday and 4.5% for the week.
Memory stocks continued to lead the slide: SK Hynix ADR fell 6.6%, Sandisk dropped 6.9%, and Micron fell 5.6%. Nvidia held up relatively well. Jensen Huang said demand for AI chips is strong, but since October 6, the stock has still pulled back by a tenth.
The wildest part was in South Korea: SK Hynix’s Korean-listed shares plunged 31.5% over the seven trading days from October 6 to 15.
Good grief. With a drop like that, it’s someone else’s account bleeding while mine watches from the sidelines.
Yesterday, Goldman Sachs said the market was overestimating the threat from ChangXin, and that SK Hynix and Samsung now offered an attractive risk-reward. But the stock prices didn’t care. When I read that, I thought: If only they’d said this a week earlier.
With the U.S. market closed, I actually feel relieved. At least for the next couple of days, I don’t have to decide whether to buy the dip.
Next week brings the end-of-month FOMC meeting and a pile of earnings reports. I guess it’ll be another tough fight.
I don’t dare guess. I’ve already learned my lesson about buying the dip.
Are you waiting for Monday’s opening bell, or have you already made up your mind?
