The $3.5T AI infrastructure boom is in jeopardy
Gartner estimates that by 2030, AI data centers will need $8.5 trillion in revenue to cover capital expenditures and deliver a 12% return. Yet enterprise and consumer AI revenues over the same period are projected to reach just $3.6 trillion—a shortfall of nearly $5 trillion, putting more than $3.5 trillion in infrastructure spending at direct risk of impairment.
Depreciation is outpacing revenue realization, so compute rentals and AI-themed tokens are likely to fall in the short term. CoreWeave’s $104.2 billion backlog may help it avoid defaulting on its debt, but it won’t protect its asset valuations. With 80% of new cloud providers unlikely to survive until 2030, the supply side will need to be weeded out. Decentralized compute tokens of this kind are likely to pull back and consolidate first. They may be weighed down by cooling enthusiasm for the AI narrative, but their losses should be smaller than those of pure-play compute tokens. They’ll continue to move to their own rhythm.
Are you waiting for this pullback in compute tokens to stabilize before buying, or cutting your losses now?
