A beginner lesson for tonight: Why do you still pay Gas when an on-chain transfer fails?

Take Ethereum, for example. A transaction gets included in a block, and the node starts executing it, but then discovers that a condition hasn’t been met. The state can be rolled back, but the computing resources already used don’t disappear, so you may still be charged a fee.

Note: A transaction that hasn’t been added to the blockchain yet and is still pending isn’t the same as one that’s already incurred an on-chain execution fee.

Don’t rush to keep clicking retry. First, check the status and reason for failure on a block explorer. Gas isn’t like a delivery fee you pay only if the transfer succeeds—it’s more like paying for the computation. Have you ever wondered about this too? #BeginnerGuide
