25x leverage, 4 months, 219x, then wiped out.
According to a report by Nownews on October 16, citing on-chain data from Lookonchain, Machi Big Brother Jeffrey Huang’s Hyperliquid account was completely liquidated during the sell-off triggered by the release of September U.S. CPI data. Four months ago, the account held about $56,000. It grew to around $12.25 million at one point—roughly 219x—but now has only about $21,800 left, a drop of more than 99%. Around $12.23 million (approximately NT$380 million) evaporated. About 25 minutes after the liquidation, he opened another 25x-leveraged $ETH long position.
A few data points:
- The trigger was September CPI: headline inflation rose 3.7% year over year (versus 3.6% expected), while core inflation was 2.6% (versus 2.5% expected). After the release, BTC fell from a recent high of about $83,927 to around $80,204 (a maximum drop of roughly 4.44%), while ETH fell from around $2,520 to about $2,317 (a maximum drop of roughly 8.08%)—the very assets he was heavily betting on.
- Hypurrscan shows that several of his ETH perpetual positions were liquidated within minutes. The positions involved hundreds of ETH, with the largest totaling 800 ETH.
- His record this year, compiled in the same report: At the end of January, a 25x ETH long was liquidated, bringing his cumulative losses to about $25.88 million. In March, he was liquidated 335 times in total, leaving roughly $30,000 in his account; his P&L swung from a paper profit of about $44.84 million to a loss of around $33.35 million. In September, Arkham estimated that his nominal long positions totaled about $84 million, while his account equity was under $4 million, implying effective leverage of more than 20x. French outlet Cryptoast calculated that his cumulative net losses since joining Hyperliquid amount to about $36.45 million.
One pattern is clear: his approach has never changed—repeatedly add funds, amplify with high leverage, get wiped out, then open new positions. Lookonchain once reported that he deposited 3.19 million USDC into Hyperliquid over 20 days and ultimately lost nearly all of it.
High leverage turns “getting the direction right” and “surviving” into two different things. A 219x gain on paper couldn’t withstand a few minutes of volatility.
Personal opinion only; this is not investment advice.
