📊 MSCI is changing its index rules: Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) and other “Bitcoin treasury” companies risk being removed. Not tomorrow morning — the final list comes out Nov. 11, with changes taking effect Nov. 30. Here’s what it means.
📌 The facts (MSCI, Oct. 15, 2026)
• “Non-operating companies” will be ineligible for the MSCI Global Investable Market indexes
• Screening criteria: operating assets + 5 financial ratios (fail 4 or more = out)
• Replaces the old rule of “≥50% of assets in crypto”
• May 2026 simulation: Strategy, Metaplanet, and Yellow Cake were flagged; SharpLink (ETH) is also in the crosshairs
• Strategy is in the MSCI USA and MSCI World indexes; its stock fell 4.2% on Friday
• Safeguard: a current constituent is only removed if it fails the test in both of the last two fiscal years
🧠 How it works, simply
An MSCI index is a list tracked by passive funds (equity ETFs). If they have to hold Strategy, they buy the stock. If Strategy is removed, those funds will have to sell — putting pressure on the stock, not automatically on $BTC itself.
⚖️ The nuance
• This isn’t a confirmed exclusion yet: the list comes out Nov. 11
• Strategy says this won’t change its business (September letter)
• Common misconception: the stock ≠ Bitcoin itself
👤 Khadija, a vendor in Abidjan, has seen “MicroStrategy = Bitcoin” everywhere. She thinks that if MSCI “kicks out” Strategy, Bitcoin will crash. In reality, this is an equity index screen. Her two-year DCA plan in BTC doesn’t depend on an MSCI list.
✅ Takeaway: index inclusion means passive flows into the stock; BTC has its own market.
