Is Starknet breaking away from Ethereum? Hold on—the vote isn’t about that at all.

Buddy: Holy crap, did you see the news? Starknet’s going solo and leaving Ethereum. Is $STRK about to take off?
Me: Sit down and put your coffee away first. The vote that opened on October 15 is about “whether to keep researching,” not “whether to move away.” Those are two completely different things.

Buddy: So what exactly are they voting on?
Me: Starknet launched a 7-day Snapshot governance vote, ending October 22, with three options: support continuing the research, oppose it, or abstain. Even if it passes, they won’t be moving away. It would only authorize the team to keep researching the path toward “becoming an independent, quantum-resistant L1.” Actually making it happen would require another formal governance vote. There isn’t even a timeline yet.

Buddy: Why are they suddenly doing this?
Me: In the words of StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson: quantum resistance is urgent, and they need to get moving. They think Ethereum’s own post-quantum upgrades are too slow—Ethereum only formed a post-quantum team in March, with initial protocol-level protection targeted for 2029. Starknet wants to become the first fully quantum-resistant chain by 2027 and doesn’t want to just sit around waiting.

Buddy: What about $STRK —will they switch tokens?
Me: The official word is that whether or not they move away, $STRK will remain the sole native token. There won’t be a new token, and the existing ETH bridge will keep operating as usual. As for the price: it was around $0.072 on October 17, down about 16% over 24 hours (October 17 market data). The price fell despite the positive news, which suggests the market voted with its feet and sold off.

Buddy: Is this vote worth keeping an eye on?
Me: Watch for the result on October 22. If Yes gets the majority, Starknet will officially set out on the path to “graduating from L2,” potentially rewriting the L2 landscape. If No gets the majority, it’ll stay Ethereum’s good student and everyone can go their separate ways.

Just my personal opinion; this is not investment advice.
