Elon Musk’s genius isn’t in the engineering design of new rocket technology.
It’s in inspiring people with the story of Mars, making space travel cool again, and raising money and taking risks on new space technologies with no immediate financial returns—just hoping that as more money comes in, more engineers will build more things, and the problems will solve themselves.
I call this the “sci-fi pretend-until-you-succeed” technique.
It’s the exact same technique Sam Altman copied from Elon:
You have a chatbot.
You don’t yet know how to make money from it.
You don’t know that it will become a coding agent in 2024.
You just talk about curing cancer and the singularity, then figure everything else out along the way, while investors pour a trillion dollars into your company.
Google had AI technology earlier, but they dragged their feet because they were afraid the new technology would eat into their ad revenue.
The Elon Musk/Sam Altman generation of CEOs has the following traits:
1) They’re already absurdly rich and take crazy moonshot risks.
They aren’t afraid of crashing like the older generation of CEOs.
2) They dream big, constantly hype things up, use sci-fi language, take “fake it till you make it” to the extreme, and launch a ton of castles in the air to keep the story and venture funding going until something sticks.
3) This combination of extreme risk-taking, funding, storytelling, and talent creates a self-fulfilling prophecy that imposes its will on reality.
