In the latest news, on October 17, Google said its Willow quantum chip had reduced the error rate by about 40 times when preparing the special states needed for quantum computing, known as “Magic States,” using a method called “Cultivation.” The research was published in Science this week and could reduce the hardware costs of future large-scale quantum computers, while drawing more attention to the potential threat of quantum computers cracking Bitcoin wallets. Magic States are a key resource for performing certain quantum computing operations, and preparing them requires substantial hardware. In the experiment, Google achieved state fidelity of about 99.99%, but only around 8% of attempts passed filtering. The researchers said the experiment will need to be scaled up, and challenges such as real-time operation and error correction still need to be addressed.
