Anthropic was exposed by Politico yesterday: it handed Congress a draft AI safety bill it had written itself.
The bar for restricting a model is absurdly high: nobody can touch it unless they can foresee “imminent losses of over $1 billion or more than 50 deaths or injuries”—and only three kinds of risks count: biological or chemical weapons, a model breaking free of human control, and cyberattacks. Anthropic writes the rules, picks the evaluators, and pays for them itself. Even the government would have to go through a judge to shut it down.
Meanwhile, reality is already more dramatic than the bill: Citi and Bank of America have started restricting AI agents from accessing your bank accounts, worried that one day AI might automatically transfer your savings away.
