Tesla unveiled the Roadster, turning the launch event into a sci-fi spectacle and even showing it briefly lifting off the ground. Its shares rose nearly 5% at one point in premarket trading.

But looking at it calmly, what’s rising here isn’t sales—it’s imagination. The car won’t go into mass production until 2028, and neither its price nor its key specs have been announced, so it will contribute almost nothing to earnings in the short term.

What Tesla has always been best at isn’t making cars, but weaving cars, AI, robots, and SpaceX into one big story to sell to the market. If the market buys it, the valuation goes up; if deliveries and costs don’t keep pace, the more excited the rally today, the uglier the fall later.

In the end, the story has to deliver.
