#nil $NIL @Nillion went in to poke at a Covenant and ended up reading a shutdown notice instead.

Nillion announced on X that its L2 will soon cease operations, and told anyone holding NIL or ETH there to move it to Ethereum L1 before it goes dark. That was Oct 15, 2026, and it came after Dusk had already reached Ethereum mainnet. I'd been filing Nillion under privacy network with its own chain in my head. What I saw instead is NIL flagship feature, encrypted conditional instructions, living on Ethereum L1 while the project's own L2 gets wound down.

The privacy rides on someone else's settlement layer. Nillion pitches blind computation as the foundation. In practice, the first visible move this week was consolidation: send users to where the liquidity already is. The first people served are ETH native traders. Anyone parked on the L2 has to act on the project's schedule.

Maybe that's just housekeeping. Small L2s do get retired. Still, I caught myself assuming the narrative and the architecture matched, and they only half do.

So if the privacy layer ends up as a guest on Ethereum, who actually holds the keys to how long it stays?
