#NEARRisesNearly10%
NEAR just posted a ~10% surge, but the derivatives data underneath tells a more complicated story.
The move: NEAR climbed 10.51% to $5.21 on Binance spot in the 24-hour session to October 16, touching an intraday high of $5.44 before settling. Spot volume hit ~$205 million — a substantial uptick. Over the past month, NEAR is up roughly 126-132%, one of the strongest large-cap performers.
The red flag: Binance futures open interest fell 9.98% over the same period, contracting to ~$260 million. A double-digit price gain alongside a double-digit OI decline is structurally consistent with a short squeeze — existing shorts being forcibly liquidated rather than new longs establishing fresh positions. The 8-hour funding rate sat near-neutral at 0.0096%, reinforcing that read.
Technical picture: NEAR sits well above its 50-day SMA ($3.75) and 200-day SMA ($2.27), confirming the intermediate and long-term trend remains upward. The MACD is at an inflection point — both the MACD line and signal line read 0.3702, histogram at exactly 0.0000. The next histogram bar direction is arguably the most actionable near-term signal. RSI at 56.54 is neutral — room for upside but no overbought edge.
Key levels:
Support: $5.06 (technical pivot) → $4.90 → $4.50 (critical)
Resistance: $5.44 (intraday high) → $5.50 (must close above for clean breakout) → $6.00
What could sustain this: Helius CEO Mert Mumtaz joining the NEAR Foundation Council on October 14 gave a governance credibility boost. NEAR Intents has processed $33B+ in cumulative cross-chain volume, and the fee-switch mechanism activated earlier this year channels a portion of Intents fees into open-market NEAR buybacks.
The caution: NEAR already failed to hold above $5.50 earlier this month, topping at $6.00 on October 12 before pulling back. If $5.50 rejects again, a slide toward $4.50 support is the likely path. Van de Poppe says he'd only accumulate aggressively after a 30-40% correction toward $10 targets.
