Big news: 9 crypto organizations have just formed a “Quantum-Resistant Alliance,” with Bitcoin in its sights ⚛️
The alliance, called Quantum Alliance, was officially announced in Lisbon. Its nine founding members include Hacken, Keystone, The Vault, Midnight Foundation, Quantus, and INTMAX.
Their estimates are eye-catching:
🔹 The public keys of around 6.4 million BTC have been exposed on-chain, representing about 30.2% of the total supply issued
🔹 Around 1.1 million of those BTC are believed to be associated with Satoshi Nakamoto
🔹 No quantum computer can currently crack these addresses, but alliance members disagree on when the risk might materialize
The alliance plans to do three things next: establish a unified “quantum-resistant readiness” standard for blockchains, publish testing benchmarks, and provide migration guidelines for addresses with exposed public keys and those that have been dormant for a long time.
The biggest disagreement is right here: if the threat really is imminent, should these long-dormant coins be helped to migrate—or simply frozen? This is no longer just a technical issue; it’s also a question of property rights.
Do you think Bitcoin should make changes now to prepare for the quantum threat? 👇
