$XAU China capitalizes on gold’s dip: biggest central-bank purchase since 2023 and record holdings
of 304 tonnes by funds
China capitalizes on gold’s dip: The People’s Bank of China added 23 tonnes to its reserves in September, its biggest central-bank purchase since October 2023, extending its buying streak to 23 consecutive months. Chinese gold ETFs recorded record holdings of 304 tonnes, with a third consecutive monthly inflow, according to the World Gold Council (Ray Jia, October 15). However, physical jewelry demand remains weak, with third-quarter withdrawals from the Shanghai Gold Exchange down 21% from last year.

Central bank: 23 months of buying

September: 23 tonnes, the biggest monthly purchase since October 2023.
Third quarter: 63 tonnes, the strongest quarter since the third quarter of 2023 (about 20 tonnes in July, 20 in August, and 23 in September).
Year to date: 103 tonnes, making it one of the most active central-bank buyers.
Holdings: 2,410 tonnes, or 8.5% of reserves ($3.8 trillion, down 2% for the month due to a decline in foreign-exchange assets), valued at about $324 billion at $4,183 per ounce.
Significance: The purchases came despite gold falling 8.5% in September, as the bank buys on dips.
