The U.S. Treasury released its latest fiscal year data on October 16. The budget deficit for fiscal year 2026, which ended on September 30, widened by $217 billion year over year to a total of $1.99 trillion. This is the largest deficit in five years, since fiscal year 2021, and the third-largest annual budget deficit in U.S. history, with the deficit rising to 6.2% of GDP.
The data reflect the continued deterioration of the U.S. fiscal position. Interest payments on the national debt surged 12% year over year to a record $1.36 trillion. Although revenue hit a record $5.40 trillion, spending of as much as $7.40 trillion and declining revenue due to tariff refunds have made the fiscal imbalance more challenging than markets expected.
The massive deficit is forcing the Treasury to continue increasing the size of its Treasury issuance, which will push U.S. Treasury yields higher over the medium to long term and place structural pressure on the dollar. Liquidity may tighten as markets absorb the huge supply of government debt, while high risk-free rates in traditional financial markets will continue to weigh on highly valued assets.
For crypto markets, the accumulation of sovereign debt risks underscores the safe-haven value of decentralized assets, but short-term liquidity drains and a high-interest-rate environment remain major headwinds. If macro funding costs remain elevated, the liquidity pressures facing $BTC and risk assets overall are unlikely to ease. 📉
