Tesla delivered 486,500 vehicles in Q3, beating market expectations, but deliveries were still down about 2.1% year over year. Its earnings report comes after the market closes on October 21. The key things to watch now aren’t how many cars it sold, but whether automotive gross margins and cash flow improved.

Beating delivery expectations and improving profits are two different things. We have the delivery figures; we’ll have to wait for the earnings report to see whether profits improved. Robotaxi and Optimus have plenty of potential, but they also require substantial R&D investment, and when they’ll start generating actual revenue remains an open question.

The market is raising the bar for tech stocks. South Korea’s stock market has plunged, dragging SanDisk and Micron down with it. Growth stories alone are no longer enough. Strong growth is a good start, but the real question is whether the October 21 earnings report delivers solid profitability.
