Just confirmed: Solana is getting a new “heart” next week ⚡
The Alpenglow upgrade is scheduled to activate on October 21:
🔹 Time: Around 22:50 Beijing time (14:50 UTC), at the start of epoch 1064
🔹 Transaction finality: Cut from about 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds—roughly 85 times faster
🔹 It will replace the existing TowerBFT consensus mechanism. The testnet switched over on September 24, followed by the devnet on September 25
Many people think Solana is already fast. But what was fast before was block production: on October 9, the block time was just reduced from 400 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds. But faster block production doesn’t mean transactions are truly finalized—final confirmation has always taken more than ten seconds. Alpenglow addresses exactly this weakness, making transfers, settlements, and on-chain trades irreversible within a fraction of a second, instead of merely likely to succeed.
Activation is just days away, but the market doesn’t seem to be paying much attention yet.
