📰 French lawmakers have set their sights on “crypto-to-stablecoin” swaps: During discussions on the 2027 budget, an amendment proposed extending the current 31.4% capital gains tax to transactions in which Bitcoin is exchanged for certain stablecoins. The scope would be limited to stablecoins that meet MiCA’s definition of e-money tokens, such as USDC.

🔥 Honestly, many people are used to swapping Bitcoin for stablecoins, thinking that as long as they haven’t converted it to euros, they haven’t really exited the crypto market. Under the proposal, this step could also trigger a tax bill, with a direct impact.

⚠️ Self-custody is also on the table. The proposal would require people to declare self-custodied holdings worth at least €100,000, with penalties for noncompliance. People holding more than €800,000 in digital assets who move their tax residence out of France could also face an exit tax.

💡 There is also a relatively lenient provision: losses could be carried forward for 10 years. However, none of these measures has become law yet. On October 9, the Finance Committee of the French National Assembly rejected the budget’s revenue section by 31 votes to 3, so the relevant amendments would need to be resubmitted.

🤔 If “exchanging Bitcoin for USDC is also subject to 31.4% capital gains tax” ultimately becomes law, would you cut back on stablecoin swaps or reconsider your tax residence?
