There was indeed an incident in Ethereum’s history when a blockchain split occurred as a result of a hack.
In 2016, The DAO project was attacked, and Ether worth tens of millions of dollars was transferred.
To deal with the crisis, the Ethereum community ultimately split: some supported changing the blockchain’s history, while others insisted on preserving the original transaction records.
Today’s ETH and ETC are the two blockchains left behind by that split.
