The Roadster is stealing the spotlight, and TSLA is rebounding in premarket trading

They’ve even put cold-gas thrusters on a sports car—Tesla is really bold this time. I’m more bullish on TSLA continuing to rebound from tonight through the run-up to next week’s earnings. The new car has sparked fresh discussion, and the premarket price is recovering too.

Nasdaq shows that TSLA briefly climbed back to around $375 in premarket trading tonight, about 3.5% above yesterday’s close of $362.44, recouping yesterday’s losses. A strong-looking premarket gain still needs buyers to back it up during regular trading. If the stock falls back toward $362 and continues lower, it will have failed to hold on to its gains since the new car was unveiled, and I’d turn bearish and expect further declines. The prior close is just a level to watch; it doesn’t guarantee support.

The official website lists different versions: the Thrust version uses cold-gas thrusters for acceleration, while the Rocket version supports upward acceleration and in-air attitude adjustments. But it’s available by invitation only, and the site explicitly says it has not been approved for use on public roads. Putting something like this in a sports car definitely makes me curious about how well it will sell. But demonstrating flight capabilities is still a long way from letting ordinary users drive it on public roads.

The cars already being delivered are still mainly Model 3s and Ys. Tesla delivered a total of 486,500 vehicles in the third quarter, including about 478,200 Model 3s and Ys, or 98.3% of the total. However eye-catching the sports car may be, the attention it gets at the launch event shouldn’t be used to estimate the profits from those deliveries.

Tesla will report its third-quarter earnings in the early hours of the 22nd Beijing time. The company has already cautioned that delivery numbers alone don’t represent its financial performance; selling prices and costs both affect how much it earns. How much more the company earned per car after delivery will matter more to my view of the share price after earnings than the Roadster’s flight capabilities.
