Today, Filecoin unveiled a major overhaul of its tokenomics. The biggest change is that the vesting period for genesis tokens is about to come to a complete end, after which the daily increase in FIL’s circulating supply is expected to be cut by 75%. At the same time, the network has reshuffled how block rewards are distributed: going forward, more rewards will go only to storage providers that bring in paying customers, while the share allocated to mining based purely on hardware-backed consensus will be sharply reduced. Any rewards that aren’t earned may even be sent directly to a burn address. Combined with the enterprise-grade and AI Agent storage cloud it just launched, it’s clear this veteran decentralized storage network no longer wants to prop up capacity figures with miners offering little real utility. Instead, it’s pushing the entire ecosystem to meet the genuine demand for storage capacity driven by AI.
