📰 Schwab, which manages around $13 trillion in assets, has announced that customers can now buy Bitcoin directly through their accounts, giving access to more than 40 million U.S. users. A traditional brokerage putting the option right inside customers’ accounts is more tangible than simply announcing that it “supports crypto assets.”

🔥 The service is called Schwab Crypto. Schwab announced its launch back in April, and it has since rolled out in phases. In addition to BTC, customers can also trade ETH through their accounts, with a 0.75% fee on each transaction.

💡 Trade execution and sub-custody are provided by Paxos. For users who already hold stocks, funds, and other assets with Schwab, being able to trade through a familiar account without having to find a separate crypto platform certainly lowers the barrier to entry.

However, “all customers” still comes with some geographic restrictions: residents of New York State and Louisiana can’t use the service for now. And a 0.75% fee per transaction isn’t exactly low, especially for frequent traders, for whom the costs can add up.

🤔 If your brokerage account offered direct access to BTC and ETH, would you buy through it and pay a 0.75% fee on each transaction, or stick with your existing crypto exchange?
