Why the meme sector is falling (October 2026)
This isn’t a temporary correction. This is the normal lifecycle.
Key data (Coin Metrics, ~150 Solana memes): • Median time to ATH: 17.2 days • Median time from peak to −95%: 370 days • 81% drop ≥90% from ATH • Only ~3% ever recover the peak • 66% have only one major rally
Volume & market share: • Launchpad volumes: from >$1.8B/day to ~$550M (−69%) • Meme share of altcoins: ~2.7–3.7% (record low)
Reasons + real examples:
1. Oversupply + fatigue
Millions of tokens dilute attention. New narratives last shorter and shorter.
2. No utility → pure narrative fade
$JIMOTHY (Seattle raccoon): ATH ~$0.042 (July 22) → now ~$0.003 (−92%+). Real cultural story, relatively broad holder distribution, zero utility. Once hype cools, only low-liquidity volatility and a clear downtrend remain. LBank delisted perps at the end of September — another hit to liquidity.
3. Post-hype cycle + capital rotation
$EMBER (embercurve launchpad token): ATH ~$49M MC (mid-September) → now ~$3.7–4M. Had real volume, fee sharing, locked liquidity, and attempts to shift toward burn mechanics. After the KOL-driven peak and first rally, mercenary liquidity left quickly and the token followed the sector down. Classic case: even with some product/mechanics, without sustained demand after the hype — −90%+.
4. Macro + liquidations + lower risk appetite
Memes are always first in line to be sold when the market cools.
The sector isn’t dead. It has simply returned to its baseline nature: short burst → long, deep decline. Most memes will continue to do −90%+ from peak.
