【Crypto Investor Watch】South Korean regulators step in! Offshore perpetual contracts offer leverage of up to 200x, and regulators are beginning to issue warnings. South Korea’s crypto market is facing another round of regulatory warnings.
On October 16, South Korea’s Financial Services Commission issued an investor risk alert focused on perpetual contracts traded on offshore crypto platforms. These products cover not only crypto assets but also price contracts for South Korean stocks such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Some offer leverage of up to 200x.
Regulators are most concerned about the combination of high leverage and a lack of investor protection.
Perpetual contracts have no expiration date and can be traded around the clock. The higher the leverage, the more likely even a small adverse price movement is to trigger liquidation, sharply reducing the investor’s principal or wiping it out entirely.
More importantly, these products on offshore platforms are generally not covered by South Korea’s existing investor protection framework. If a platform goes bankrupt, suspends trading, suffers a system failure, or becomes involved in a dispute over funds, users may have difficulty obtaining recourse under South Korean law.
South Korean regulators also said that if they find offshore platforms operating illegally within the country, they will take measures including referring cases to investigative authorities, and will closely monitor the impact of these products on the domestic market.
