📊 Market Snapshot 10.16: Bitcoin ETFs Attracting Funds, Ethereum ETFs Seeing Outflows, Prices and Volumes Diverging

U.S. spot ETFs saw an interesting split in fund flows yesterday:
• BTC ETFs had net inflows of $5.06 million, marking the second day of net inflows this week. BlackRock’s IBIT alone saw $16.79 million in net inflows (about 204 BTC), while Grayscale and Invesco saw net outflows of $7.64 million and $4.09 million, respectively.
• ETH ETFs, by contrast, saw net outflows of $60.22 million, marking the third day of net outflows this week. BlackRock’s ETHA saw $44.39 million in outflows, while only Fidelity’s FETH went against the trend, with $2.44 million in inflows.

The cumulative figures are even more interesting: BTC ETFs have had cumulative net inflows of $56.96 billion, with total net assets of $105.71 billion, equal to 6.41% of Bitcoin’s total market cap. ETH ETFs have had cumulative net inflows of $13.01 billion, with total net assets of $15.29 billion, equal to 5.10% of Ethereum’s total market cap.

Now, prices: Bitcoin was up about 0.85% over $BTC 24 hours, at $81,816; Ethereum was up 3.09% over $ETH 24 hours, at $2,444—roughly three times Bitcoin’s gain.

In other words, ETH ETFs have seen net outflows for three consecutive days, yet ETH has outperformed Bitcoin. Institutional funds are pulling out, while market participants are buying. This kind of divergence has often signaled short-term volatility in the past.

A little context is also worth noting: September’s PPI rose 6.3% year over year, above expectations. Bitcoin briefly fell below $80,000 intraday before recovering. ETH gained 71% in the third quarter, but has since fallen nearly 9% from its $2,684 level at quarter-end.

ETF net inflows ≠ guaranteed price gains. Institutional portfolio adjustments can lag, while prices reflect immediate sentiment and leveraged-position liquidations. Looking only at fund flows and ignoring price—or only at price and ignoring fund flows—can both lead to misjudgments.
