I’m 34, and I’ve spent 9 years in crypto. I believe less and less in getting rich overnight, and more and more in position management.
I entered the crypto market at 24, and now I’m 34. Over these 9 years, I’ve experienced the madness of bull markets and witnessed the brutality of bear markets. I’ve seen people make a fortune in a single market cycle, and I’ve also seen people give back all their previous gains to the market after one oversized position. Over the years, people often ask me:
“How can you make money consistently in crypto over the long term?”
My answer is: You can misread the market or miss an opportunity, but you must never let one mistake cost you the chance to enter the market again. That’s why, over the years, I’ve placed more and more importance on one thing: position management.
Today, I’m sharing an approach I’ve been studying and using: the 3-4-3 phased allocation method.
Take $BTC as an example. Assume the total capital you plan to invest is 100%.
Stage 1: 3 — Use 30% to establish an initial position. Don’t go all in right from the start just because you’re bullish on the market. Invest 30% first to establish a base position. The goal isn’t to guarantee that you buy at the lowest point, but to leave yourself room to adjust. If the market develops as expected, you’ll have a position; if it continues to fall, you’ll still have capital to respond.
Stage 2: 4 — Build your position in stages with 40%. When an opportunity that fits your plan appears, consider gradually increasing your position. Here’s the key: don’t add just because the price has fallen, and certainly don’t add just because you’re at a loss. Instead, watch the market trend, key price levels, and the risk-reward ratio, and execute your plan in stages as long as your trading rationale still holds. If the market is no longer moving as expected, reassess rather than continuing to invest just to lower your average cost.
Stage 3: 3 — Keep the final 30% for trend confirmation. The final 30% isn’t money you have to spend. Once the trend is further confirmed and the trading conditions fit your plan, consider whether to participate. If no ideal opportunity appears, holding on to cash is also an option.
Remember:
The point of 343 isn’t to spend all 10 portions of your capital. It’s to make sure every addition to your position is backed by a reason, while always keeping your options open.
