Google has recently made a new breakthrough in quantum computing, bringing renewed attention to Bitcoin’s long-term security.

On October 15, Google announced that its Willow quantum chip had successfully tested a new technique that can reduce the error rate of certain quantum states by about 40 times. This could help overcome a major technical bottleneck on the path toward practical quantum computing.

Why does this matter for BTC?

Simply put, Bitcoin wallet security relies on a set of mathematical algorithms. In the future, if quantum computers become powerful enough, they could potentially derive private keys from public keys and transfer assets without authorization.

But don’t panic just yet!

Google’s breakthrough does not mean that it can already crack Bitcoin.

Today’s quantum computers are still a long way from breaking the cryptographic system used by BTC. This achievement mainly reduces the technical cost of future quantum computing; many hurdles still need to be overcome before an actual crack is possible.

Still, the long-term risk is worth preparing for in advance.

The public keys of some BTC addresses have already been revealed, making them theoretically more vulnerable to future quantum attacks. The industry has therefore begun discussing how to upgrade Bitcoin’s cryptographic protections, so assets in older addresses can gradually be moved to a more secure system.

Here’s the question: Could quantum computing become Bitcoin’s biggest security challenge in the future?

Not in the short term. But upgrading Bitcoin requires coordination among developers, miners, exchanges, and users—it can’t happen overnight.

📌 What’s really worth paying attention to isn’t that “quantum computing is about to crack BTC,” but that technological progress is reminding the entire industry to prepare security upgrades before the threat actually arrives.
