They’re all major assets in the crypto market, so why have Bitcoin and Ethereum already broken their all-time highs, while many early XRP holders still haven’t broken even?

XRP is currently worth around $1.33, 62.5% below its all-time high of about $3.55 in January 2018. Although it briefly broke above its previous high in 2025, it then fell sharply.

Why did this happen? There are three main reasons.

First, the circulating supply of XRP has increased.

Since 2017, XRP’s circulating supply has grown by about 63%, from 38.7 billion to 63.1 billion tokens. As more tokens enter circulation, the value of each token may decline even if the overall market capitalization stays about the same.

Second, institutional investment and trading activity have been relatively weak.

Nearly a year after the launch of XRP spot ETFs, cumulative net inflows have reached about $1.8 billion—far below the inflows into BTC ETFs, which can exceed $1 billion in a single day. Meanwhile, XRP spot and futures trading volumes have also fallen significantly.

Third, growth in Ripple’s business doesn’t necessarily mean XRP’s price will rise.

Ripple is focused on areas such as cross-border payments, its RLUSD stablecoin, and trade finance. Unlike ETH and SOL, it isn’t primarily building around popular ecosystems like DeFi.

On top of that, the years-long legal dispute with the U.S. SEC also affected market demand for XRP.

So, does this mean XRP has no chance of recovering?

It’s not that simple. But investors need to distinguish between a company’s business success and the performance of the token it issues or is associated with. One doesn’t guarantee the other.

📌 What’s really worth watching next is whether demand for XRP can recover, whether growth in its circulating supply will slow, and whether it can improve its performance relative to BTC.

To understand a token, don’t just look at how successful the company behind it is. Pay closer attention to whether the token itself has sustained demand.
