More than HK$4 million was lost by a Hong Kong virtual currency exchange in this account hijacking scam. Over the past two weeks, the Hong Kong police’s “CyberDefender” platform received more than 150 reports of WhatsApp account hijacking scams, with total losses exceeding HK$15 million.

Foresight News described how this case unfolded: an employee’s account was hijacked, the original work group was blocked, and its members were blacklisted. The scammer copied the original group’s images, name, members, and profile pictures to create a new group, then impersonated a client representative and proposed an exchange. As usual, the cryptocurrency was sent to a designated wallet, while the client’s account was debited at the same time. The fraud was only discovered when the wallet balance did not match and a phone call was made to verify the transaction. The company lost more than HK$4 million.

The group’s details could be copied wholesale, while the transfer still went through the usual process. Of the more than 150 cases and HK$15 million in losses reported over two weeks, this one alone accounted for over HK$4 million.
