📰 Before the fallout over Ledger’s security issues had even been properly addressed, the company launched Atom, a smartphone-style hardware wallet, on October 16. The Founder’s Edition is available for preorder at $849, while the standard edition is expected to cost $899. The device is planned for release in mid-2027.
🔥 The device uses a dual-operating-system design to separate everyday apps from sensitive operations such as handling private keys and signing transactions. It also features hardware-level tamper detection, a physical privacy switch, and an AI Agent. The AI can monitor the market and prepare transactions, but users still have to manually confirm any financial operations on the secure screen.
To be honest, the product packs in plenty of features, but the timing is awkward. A supply-chain attack was previously uncovered through CryptoBilis, Ledger’s authorized Southeast Asian reseller, and tampered devices caused nearly $100 million in losses. Ledger suspended sales through the affected channel, but it still hasn’t clearly explained how affected users will be compensated or whether their devices will be replaced.
👀 Atom will initially be sold only through Ledger’s official website, apparently to prevent another issue with third-party channels. But with its phone-like appearance and prominent Ledger branding, the community has already joked that it’s a “walking ATM.” In the first half of 2026, 52 verified wrench attacks were reported, causing losses of $124.1 million. That concern is no joke.
🤔 If you were an affected user, should Ledger first come up with a clear compensation and replacement plan, or is this tamper-resistant design enough to convince you to spend another $899?
